Whenever I park next to an XJ I’m always amazed at how tiny they are, it’s amazing to think that only 500 cc separates these two for engine capacity. The XJ really was a powerhouse for its size.

didn’t know that, interesting. I mean, they aren’t Land Cruisers, but they’re okay.

I recall my parent 80 series and I recall my brother company vehicle shopping back when the XJ was new (and new to Oz). I went with him to check out vehicles I couldn’t afford...like the XJ.

Sat in one and went...nope. I recall an automatic gear stick that looked like a Stanley screwdriver had been shoved into a kids school lunchbox. Everything about the space, size, visibility and performance of the thing (all good) went out the window for me because of that lever and the rest of the internal fit and finish.

Despite this, Jeep Oz sold quite a large number of them and they were a common sight (so what would I know?). These days they seem quite rare and those you do see look well beaten...an example like the one shown would be considered near pristine.

I had a 91 Laredo with the 4.0 HO and 5 speed and I loved it. I loved that it was boxy without apology and I loved the way it went with the big 6 and 5 speed. I also adored the interior (best I could find)

Still would really consider buying a 2-door... Kind of difficult to find a decent one, let alone a 5-speed. I might accept auto.

An XJ was one of the first American cars I drove (along with a C3(?) Corvette, like 5.7L engine, unheard of in the UK, a 3 spd auto (??) and generally just so slow (???) I think this was the height of the emissions handicapping era though) I too was dismayed at the interior. Then again in the UK it was sort of drummed into us to look down on everything American. Plenty of them still going strong though and now I love that basic, no frills design.

Ach - as much as I love our XJ, I’m honestly feeling the itch to move on to something a little larger (you know how I’m lusting after our neighbor’s FZJ80 that he never drives and yet refuses to sell to me at a ridiculously low price).

As our overlanding kit grows, the space crunch in the Cherokee has us contemplating removing the back seat on a semi-permanent basis, which isn’t terribly convenient. It really is small.

Great machines the XJ, but they are tiny things...I mean tiny. They are 2 inches shorter, 4 inches narrower and 3 inches less tall...than this

Holy crap! I didn’t realize that - I was riding around in a rental Renegade in LA this past weekend and I thought to myself, “Shoot, for a compact SUV, this thing is pretty roomy.” Thought confirmed.

Yeah I think the ‘shock’ for Aussies at the time was an interior in a new car in the early 1990's that looked like it was fully imported from 1975. But the price and performance of the vehicle itself made it easy for many punters to overlook it and even warm to its retro practicality
